The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, has once again raised national concern over the state of democracy in Nigeria, insisting that the PDP is prepared to provide a credible rescue pathway.
He made the remarks in Bauchi while speaking on the state of the nation and the party’s preparations ahead of its national convention.
Damagum noted that recent political and governance developments in Nigeria point to a democracy struggling to survive. He cited rising insecurity, economic hardship, and shrinking civic space as indicators that the democratic culture is under pressure. According to him, Nigerians deserve a system that guarantees freedom, accountability, and responsible leadership.
Speaking on the forthcoming PDP national convention, the chairman said the party remains focused and undistracted. He revealed that the organizing committees are working in line with the party’s constitution to ensure a smooth and transparent process.
Damagum added that the convention will reposition the PDP for stronger national engagement and renewed confidence from citizens.
He called on Nigerians, especially democratic stakeholders, to lend their support to a political alternative that can offer hope and stability. The PDP chairman stressed that the party has the structure, experience, and national connection to deliver credible leadership, adding that the time has come for citizens to unite behind a vision that puts Nigeria first.
Damagum reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to dialogue, national reconciliation, and democratic values. He emphasized that democracy thrives only when people defend it, pledging that the PDP will continue to stand as a voice for the Nigerian people and a platform for restoring the country’s lost glory.
