FIFA Picks South African Referees for Super Eagles’ Crucial Playoff Clash

World football governing body, FIFA, has appointed a South African officiating team for Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash against Gabon. The development has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerian football fans.

As preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Gabon, FIFA has confirmed the appointment of a South African refereeing crew to handle the first leg encounter.

The match, scheduled to hold in Rabat, Morocco, will be officiated by Tom Abongile as the center referee, assisted by Zakhele Siwela and Lubabalo Mtembu as first and second assistant referees respectively. The fourth official is Luxolo Badi, also from South Africa.

FIFA says the appointments were made based on merit and current performance records on the continent.

However, the decision has generated mixed reactions among Nigerian fans, with some expressing concerns over regional bias, while others have called for calm and focus ahead of the match.

The return leg is expected to be played in Abuja, with Nigeria hoping to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Super Eagles are expected to resume full training this weekend as Coach Finidi George continues fine-tuning tactics for the crucial playoff tie.
