The Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended a 30-year-old man, Mamuda Zakari Yau, popularly known as Wadata, for allegedly killing a commercial motorcyclist and stealing his motorcycle in Bauchi metropolis.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the tragic incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, 16th October 2025, at Unguwan Dr Sulaiman Adamu Quarters near the old airport.
A distress call was received around 9:30 p.m. reporting a violent confrontation that resulted in the death of a young man.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, Yau, engaged the victim, identified as 25-year-old Basiru Mohammed from Zango Sa’idawa, in a heated altercation.
During the encounter, Yau allegedly used a knife to fatally stab the motorcyclist before fleeing with his red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration number NNG 813 UM.
Reports say residents quickly responded to the victim’s cries for help and chased the fleeing suspect, forcing him to abandon the motorcycle and escape.
The victim was immediately rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where doctors sadly confirmed him dead on arrival.
Following swift police action, detectives from the ‘E’ Division Yelwa launched an investigation that led to the suspect’s arrest after crucial evidence, including his mobile phone, was recovered from the scene.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to committing the crime, citing financial hardship and his desire to marry a third wife as motivation.
Items recovered from the scene include the stolen Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, a blood-stained knife, a pair of shoes, and an Android phone belonging to the suspect. These, according to police authorities, will serve as key evidence in the ongoing investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for detailed investigation and subsequent prosecution.
He also commended the vigilance of residents and assured the public of the command’s commitment to ensuring justice and safety across the state.
