A tragic incident has occurred in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State, where a young woman reportedly took her own life after being forced by her father to marry one of his friends against her will.
According to reports from the area, the heartbreaking incident happened on Sunday evening at about 6:20 p.m., when the woman, who had been under intense emotional distress, ended her life following continuous pressure from her family to proceed with the arranged marriage.
A local child protection volunteer, Bukar Fantami Gubio, confirmed the development, describing the incident as deeply unfortunate and a sad reflection of the challenges young women face when their rights and voices are ignored.
Mr. Gubio revealed that the deceased had earlier made it known that she was not willing to marry the man chosen by her father, as she was in love with another person of her choice. Despite her objections, the family reportedly insisted on going ahead with the forced union.
He explained that the unbearable emotional pain and pressure the young woman went through pushed her to take her own life, calling the situation a preventable tragedy that calls for urgent social and legal action.
Mr. Gubio called on human rights organizations, law enforcement agencies, and other relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that justice is served to deter future occurrences.
He further appealed to parents, guardians, and community leaders to respect the choices of young women in marriage decisions, stressing that forced marriages remain a grave violation of human rights and dignity.
As of the time of this report, the police and the Borno State Government are yet to officially comment on the incident, even as residents of Gubio continue to express shock and sorrow over the young woman’s death.
